There are some potentially exciting story arcs and mysteries that emerge throughout this episode that will hopefully provide some substance to Terra Nova beyond its beautiful visuals and abundance of dinosaurs. As the Shannon family begins to explore their strange new paradise we're introduced, piece-by-piece, to the hidden truths that exist beyond the walls of Terra Nova. Whether he's doing that to protect Terra Nova or for his own nefarious scheme remains to be seen. Taylor emerges as a cipher in "Genesis." At face value, he certainly seems like a straightforward, no nonsense, leader, but the latter half of the episode reveals cracks in his story. However, Taylor leaves out a few intriguing elements which emerge later and will surely act as the catalyst for the narrative's over arcing story going forward. Commander Nathaniel Taylor ( Stephen Lang) acts as leader of the Terra Nova settlement and quickly orients the new arrivals on what they can expect and the importance of their mission. Play Once the Shannon family leaps back in time, the narrative begins to pick up as we're introduced to the remaining regular cast members. Jim Shannon ( Jason O'Mara) is an intelligent yet somewhat impulsive protagonist who finds himself in trouble with the law early in the episode. They are a charismatic and risky family unit who aren't afraid to break a few rules to keep themselves together against monumental odds. Thankfully, the Shannon family acts as an adequate gateway into this strange new world. While Terra Nova is certainly a visual treat, the show will live or die on the substance of its story and characters. Electronic billboards fill the sides of buildings and deliver slogans like "Four is a Family" that do a good job of relaying how bleak this future Earth really is. It's the little things that make this future world so fascinating and it shares a visual style that is, at times, very similar to Blade Runner. Without getting preachy, Terra Nova depicts 2149 Earth on the brink of destruction brought on by our own negligence. The future world of Terra Nova is well-realized.
